UD Monitor

UD Monitor is an utility for the GRID.ORG, World Community Grid and Folding@home distributed computing projects. It provides an easy way to download several WUs at once and process them one by one, without communicating with the server in between. It also has many other useful functions.

For instructions on how to use UD Monitor see the User Manual or the FAQ. If you intend to use UD Monitor with Folding@home, see the F@h setup guide. Some of the pages are translated to languages other than English.

UD Monitor is Free Software, distributed under the terms of GNU General Public License. Instructions for compiling the program from source code can be found here.

You may also help find bugs and test new features by using UD Monitor beta versions.

Download

The exe-file you download is a self-extracting archive. Launch it, point to the folder where you want UD Monitor to be installed and press Extract. If there is a previous version of UD Monitor, make sure that it is not running and answer "Yes to all" when asked about overwriting.

The extractor does not add any icons to Start menu or Desktop, so you'll have to do this manually (if you wish). It also does not write anything to the registry, so if you need to uninstall the program, just delete its folder with all its contents.

As you may have noticed, UD Monitor development by me is paused indefinitely, or maybe completely stopped. I keep using the program on one machine only, with Folding@home, and quite satisfied with it as it is.

I also run DC projects (SETI@home and climateprediction.net) on two other computers - and there, they are managed by BOINC. While initially being difficult for some "hard-core DC fans" to get used to, BOINC has changed alot since its first versions, and now grown to be a very convenient tool, which has "native" ways to do all the things (and more) which we were trying to do using UD Monitor before. Eventually, it seems that Folding@home will also migrate to BOINC, and the need for UD Monitor will disappear completely. Or maybe, it will be reborn in some new way, again, doing things which are not satisfactory done by the "stock" client program. :)

Also, for the record, over time I became much less interested in Delphi (in which UD Monitor is programmed), as I now believe that Windows development, i.e. writing programs for one closed platform only, has no future, and in fact, Windows itself may have no future. Therefore, if I ever write some other tool for DC projects (or not), it will 1)run under GNU/Linux or other Free systems and 2)may eventually be ported to legacy platforms, like win32. ;)

So... that's all for now. If there will be any update about UD Monitor, I will inform you by posting here. Keep crunching for the greater good, use Free Software, and take care.

  • At the top of the main page I have placed links to translated versions of this website. Note that because these translations are automatic, there can be no certainity regarding their quality or correctness. If something is unclear in translation, check what the original, English version of the site says.
  • There seems to be no way to switch from one translated version to another, and no way to return to English version of the website from a translated version by following links. Solution to both problems is to use the browser's "Back" button, or to manually re-enter the URL "http://udmon.sourceforge.net/" into the address bar (and then click another translation's URL, if needed).

I have found a very nice and through article entitled "How to install, configure and run UD Monitor", written by BigFoot.

Please remember that if you have written any (English or non-English) articles, FAQs or instructions about UD Monitor, I would really appreciate if you would drop me a line about it (with the URL), so that I could announce your article here, and place a link to it in UD Monitor FAQ or in the Translations section.
