UD Monitor FAQ
Folding@home
Setup Guide
To start UD Monitor in F@h mode, create shortcut for "ud_mon.exe
-fah", or use the included udmon-fah.bat. Note that right
after creation all F@h cache slots will be configured to download only Genome@home2
WU — that's because downloading and storing multiple Folding@home3 WUs is strongly
discouraged by the project's scientists. Note that Folding@home mode currently
works only on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.
- Only console version of the Folding@home client is supported at the moment. So, download FAH4Console.exe from Stanford website and place it in an empty directory.
- Download the latest version of UD Monitor, unzip it, then
run
udmon-fah.bat. - A "Browse..." dialog will appear, asking you to locate
FAH4Console.exe. Do it, and click OK. After that, you'll see the main window of UD Monitor. - Caching is only available if running on WinNT/2000/XP. So, if you're running Win9x, your configuration of UD Monitor is finished, otherwise read on.
- Switch to the "Cache" tab and mark the "Use cache" checkbox.
- Now, it's a good time to create some cache slots.
Folding@home makes it difficult(or impossible) to have more than 8 copies of the client on one machine and still produce valuable results. So, it's better to create no more than 8 cache slots. To do it, press "Insert" eight times. Or you may use the "New Slot" item of the pop-up menu which appears when you right-click the empty white space on the "Cache" tab. - Right click the list of cache slots, select "Configure Slots..." and specify your preferences, such as username and team number. Note that it is not possible to select 0(zero) as your team number. By the way, this configuration window is now also available as a stand-alone utility.
- Make sure your computer is online. Press F12(or select "Send/Receive" from the pop-up menu). This will ask UD Monitor to download a number of WUs needed to fill the slots you've just created. You'll see Folding@home client starting and closing several times.
- After the download will complete, UD Monitor will start the F@h Client again, but this time will allow it to begin processing(and process) a WU.
- After that, UD Monitor will switch the Client to the next WU, and then again to the next one, until no WUs will be left unprocessed in cache.
- After the last cached WU will finish processing, UD Monitor will do nothing, but allow the F@h client which finished processing of the last WU to keep running(actually, it behaves accordingly to ".exe to run" tab of "Settings", but you probably haven't specified anything there).
- Now, repeat from step 8 :-)
